If ever there was one person meant to take over the 2019 Met Gala, it’s Cardi B.
On Monday night’s pink carpet, the “Be Careful” rapper, 26, stole the show in an oversized red Thom Browne gown that featured feathers, a bedazzled swim cap and layers of fabric that accentuated her breasts and body.
The enormous train was sewn into round circles and splayed out yards behind the star, inspiring people on Twitter to compare the fabric to a sleeping bag; despite some confusion, this year’s camp theme does not refer to tents and s’mores, but rather flamboyance and pushing boundaries.
However, many others immediately hailed Cardi as this year’s best dressed, which should come as no surprise. Ever since she lit up the charts with her debut single “Bodak Yellow,” Cardi B has been wearing more and more outrageous clothing, including the Botticelli-inspired vintage Thierry Mugler couture look she chose for the 2019 Grammy Awards.
With the help of stylist Kollin Carter, Cardi has only pushed the limits further, with risqué music video looks and wildly expensive and lavish courtroom outfits.
Even her husband Offset was impressed. “Wifey is the truth she just killed the Met Gala @iamcardib that dress is FIRE!!!! WOW !!!!!” the rapper wrote on Twitter. Though he has attended in the past, it seems the Migos member is skipping this year’s festivities due to some legal trouble. Police in Georgia issued an arrest warrantlast week after Offset allegedly smacked a cellphone out of a fan’s hand at a Target.
Cardi made quite the splash during her Met Gala debut last year; not only did she show up in an intricate, Jeremy Scott-designed Moschino gown with matching gloves and headpiece, but she was also pregnant with her first child with Offset, Kulture.
But the real drama started after the red carpet. During a Met Gala afterparty, a member of Cardi’s security team roughed up a self-described “autograph hound” after he allegedly invaded the pregnant rapper’s personal space. He later sued her crew as well as security staff at the Mark Hotel, where the party took place, for standing idly by as he was allegedly attacked.
Following the altercation, Offset woke up the next morning to find his $150,000 diamond necklace had been stolen from their hotel room.
Let’s hope this year’s afterparties go much more smoothly for the married couple.
